Treated vs. Inherent FR Fabrics
FR clothing comes in two types:
- Treated FR Fabric: Regular fabrics treated with flame-resistant chemicals. Affordable and effective but can lose protection over time, especially with frequent washing or chemical exposure.
- Inherent FR Fabric: Built-in flame resistance at the fiber level—like Nomex or Modacrylic—which never washes out. These offer long-term durability and consistent protection.
Who Wears FR Clothing?
From oil & gas crews to welders and electricians, FR clothing is essential in industries with constant exposure to sparks, flames, or molten metals. It’s a vital line of defense in high-risk environments.
How to Care for FR Clothing
To maintain protection:
- Avoid bleach and harsh detergents
- Tumble dry on low heat
- Wash inside out to preserve reflective strips and finishes
- Follow manufacturer care labels to ensure safety performance lasts
Key FR Safety Standards
- EN ISO 11612:2015: Protection against heat, flames, and molten splashes
- EN ISO 14116:2015: Flame resistance for low-risk environments
- EN ISO 11611:2015: Protection for welding and metalwork, including sparks and spatter
Some garments are also Multinorm, combining flame resistance with high visibility (EN 20471), weatherproofing (EN 343), and anti-static protection (EN 1149-5).
